St. Fergal’s Parish

bids farewell

to the

Marist Sisters

At concelebrated Mass on the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary , 7th December,  St. Fergal’s Parish bade farewell to the Marist Sisters who had served in the parish since 1976.

A presentation of gifts was made by the parish and a scroll was presented by St. Fergal’s National School.

After Mass the sisters were joined by the parishioners for light refreshments in the St. Anthony Room

L to R:

Fr. Hugh O’Donnell, OFM, Very Rev. Fr. Larry Behan, PP and Moderator, St. Fergal’s Parish, Chief  Celebrant and Very Rev. Fr. John O’Brien, (former PP at St. Fergal’s)

L to R:

Fr.Larry, Fr.John, Sr Vera, Sr.Donal, Sr.Aideen.  Srs of St.Gildas, Loreto Srs., Friends,

The international Marist family came into being in France shortly after the French Revolution. On June 18, 1873, the first Sisters came to Ireland, in response to an appeal from the parish priest in Carrick-on-Shannon, to take over the primary school and tend to the needs of the poor.

They are inspired to follow Mary through our life journey, to be the Marian face of the Church: to think, to judge, to feel and to act as Mary did.

The Marist way of living out one’s Baptism can only be learned from Mary herself. Even though she was the mother of Christ, she never claimed any honours for herself.

We recall the many individual Marist Sisters who served the the people of St. Fergal’s Parish including

Sr.Leo, Sr.Anne Rynne, Sr.Elizabeth, Sr.Eileen, Sr.Adelaide.

Sr. Catherine Jordan, Sr. Mary Johnstone, Sr.Anne McCormack, Sr.Geraldine, Sr.Maria, Sr.Inez, Sr.Maureen, Sr.Vera Sr. Catherine

Sr.Donall, Sr. Aideen, Sr. Brigid Mary.

Among the many works of service the Sisters were involved with were Schools, Older people, St.Vincent de Paul, Apostolic Work, Cairdeas, Liturgy, Choirs, Readers, Ministers of the Eucharist, Parish Council Members, Stations of the Cross, Altar Servers, School Prayer Services, and many many more.

Marist Sisters have served and continue to serve throughout Ireland in education, nursing, parish ministry, retreat work, social justice, prison and hospital chaplaincy, and a shelter for homeless families- in Dublin, Belfast, Carrick-on-Shannon, Tubbercurry and Charlestown.

Although no longer in Ballywaltrim,  the Marist community will always be alive in the hearts and minds of the people of St.Fergal’s parish.

On behalf of the parishioners past and present we thank you for your service, your kindness and your friendship and we wish each and every one many years of health and happiness and we wish a bright future for the Marist Sisters of Ireland and the World.

Thank you.

Dear Friends
I wish to express my most sincere
thanks to all who undertook the
organisation of the wonderful
celebration which took place in the St
Anthony Room on Wednesday last, the
7th of June, to mark my 25 years in the
Priesthood, I am deeply grateful and
humbled by your amazing generosity.
St Fergal’s is a great Parish, its
Parishioners (my friends) have a warm
welcome for everyone, there is
friendship, kindness, and understanding
for all who may need it, and at any time.
I feel very fortunate to have been
appointed Parish Priest here at St
Fergal’s, and also as Moderator of the
Bray, and Enniskerry Pastoral Area.
I never cease to be amazed by the
sincerity and warmth of our strong faith
community and feel very blessed to be
part of it.
Once again, my most sincere thanks,
and may God, bless, protect, and
reward, each and everyone of you, and
keep you always in his care.
Fr Larry
